Chemin de Fer Basics – Part Two

We resume our article on the abc’s of black jack. In Part One we reviewed the concept of chemin de fer, hitting, holding with the current hand and how to double down. In part two we’ll discuss splitting, surrendering and insurance.

Split: if a player is assigned 2 cards of the same amount (two 8’s for example) she may break them up to make 2 different hands. If you choose to divide your hand you will have to lay a new wager equal to the initial bet.

Surrender: A few betting houses will let gamblers to surrender the hand they have been assigned along with fifty percent of the original wager they made prior to the croupier looking at their hand. Keep in mind it’s important to ask the croupier for clarification on the table rules or check the game rules area on the online betting house you’re gambling on.

Insurance: When the croupiers face up card is an Ace gamblers have the chance to purchase insurance. You will lay half of the initial bet before the croupier looks at his cards; if the croupier has blackjack you will win the insurance bet but still lose the initial wager. Unfortunately if the croupier doesn’t have black jack the gambler loses the insurance. It’s a chance but one that’s well worth it, if used as part of a clever scheme.

Once a gambler has stood or busted by going over 21 the dealer will reveal his or her cards and will go on to deal themselves cards until 1 of the following things has happened: if they have reached seventeen, a croupier will not typically take another card because of the possibility of going bust, if they have drawn 21 or if they have busted.
